Blackwater River, located in Franklin County, Virginia, flows from its source near Petersburg, Virginia. Its water is clear, dark, low in nutrients and tannin stained. Striped bass, river herring, alewives and blueback, largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, flier, and chain pickerel all reside in this river. Bowfin and gar are also common. Deer, squirrels, raccoons, numerous waterfowl, reptiles, and amphibians can be seen when visiting. There's also a Blackwater River preserve that has bald cypress forest, where some of the trees are estimated to be over 800 years old. The preserve is also only accessible by canoe and kayak. This is a beautiful river, perfect for all kids of activities!
