Whitewater Forum : Nooksack Canyon Wood Report Author: doggievacation
Subject: Nooksack Canyon Wood Report
Posted: 25 Mar 2017 at 7:02pm

Note:  this is a wood report for the Class III+ section from Douglas Fir CG down.  This is NOT in regard to the Class IV+ Horseshoe Bend section.

First off, there is a large log just upstream of the bridge, maybe 50 feet above the large rock.  It spans about 3/4 of the river, from RR to RL.  You can put in just below this log, and still ran the drop with big rock, or you can put in below the big rock.  A Class IV paddler could use the normal put in, and make the move to get around the tree, but I would not expect a Class III paddler to do it.

Next up:  there is a huge log jam on RL at the surf wave.  No wood is in play, but if the river spikes again, this wood will move down into the canyon.

The Nozzle is actually clean right now.  The old river alert from 2015 is no longer valid.

Below the Nozzle, there is a large rock in the center of the river.  A log blocks the right channel, which is the normal line.  The left channel has a bunch of semi-submerged wood.  You can run the left channel, over the wood, with enough water, but it could pose real problems for a swimmer at lower water.

The rest of the walled-in canyon section including Landslide is clean.

Just below the Glacier Take Out, there is a massive river-wide log jam.  Last year, it was just a few trees and you could skirt it on the right side in a kayak.  This year, it is riverwide and damn near solid right down to the waterline.  At flows above maybe 1200 cfs (just guessing) there is a small channel just upstream that might open up.  Otherwise, this is a mandatory portage.

The rest of the run down to Green Bridge and even further to MP 27 on the Mt. Baker Hwy is all good to go.
