Description
This run picks up where the 'Rainbow Gardens' section stops, with the friendly Lorin Farr wave. To summarize- sporadic plop and drop rapids for the first half, last half is 'jungle boating'. At least 1 portage(if you're running the whole thing), up to 4 portages at certain higher flows. Starts with a triple drop at the second foot bridge- where left line is friendliest, then down to Crystals Wal-Mart Wave for a fun beginner surf. If continuing on, the jungle boating starts here, then under a potential gnarly railroad bridge then down to the Car Hole, where you'll drop while eddying right(scout first if you've never seen it, or just go with someone who has) a permanent log jam after, where high flows sneak left, low flows is portage. Major jungle boating from the portage to the Weeber River confluence, where you float flat water to the take out.
Rapids
| # | Rapid | Class | Recommended flow | Description | Scout |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Footbridge Triple Drop | III+ | 150–900 | The second footbridge you go under, right after the put in, has an entertaing triple drop. The first ledge is right under the bridge, followed by a couple rocky drops in succesion. Left side is smoothest, right side goes but scout first to see the line. Playable if you dare. These footbridges are portages at flows higher than 900 cfs. |
On the river walk trail following the river side. |
| 2 | Crystal's Wal-Mart Wave | II to II+ | 100–1,500 | A nice, friendly, year-round play feature for experimenting with surfing, enders, and cartwheels in the current. A man-made(woman-made?) feature as part of the Ogden River rejuvenation project- resulting in mutliple little features and obstacle along this whole stretch of river. Flows of over 400 seems to wash this feature out. |
From the river walk trail, or behind the Wall-Mart on Wall ave and 20th Street. |
| 3 | Car Hole | III+ | 200–1,500 | This feature has improved with the recent tree triming, but it still has potential for problems. Words can't do this feature justice regarding it's 'uniquness'- scout first or go with someone who's done it. Essentially your dropping it while pointing diagonally right, eddying out as fast as possible to avoid going into the trees. |
From the riverwalk trail, or specifically, park at the 20th street pond parking lot and head to the opposite side of the pond. It's the first place you can see the river, from the paved path, heading counter-clockwise. |
Access
| Type | Name | Elevation | Camping | Water | Boat ramp | Vehicle access | Description |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Put-In | Lorin Farr Wave | 4,317 Feet | No | No | No | All Vehicles | Put in at the Rainbow Gardens run take-out |
| Take-Out | 1200 W diversion dam | 4,268 Feet | No | No | No | All Vehicles | The take out is kind of tricky, you'll have plenty of time to see the big diversion dam to start heading river right, to take out as far down downstream(as close to the dam) as you feel comfortable. Signs at the gate-at the most appealing parking, say 'No Parking'. I gotten away with quick scouts parking there, but I wouldn't push it. However there are no 'No Parking' signs at the west side of the gate, providing space for up to two vehicles. Me mindfull of large trucks that pass here and not to block the gate. |
