Description
The upper section of the Yaqui begins on state road 20 and heads south to Soyopa. The river runs through a small canyon and has some of the best year round flows due to it's larger size. A good portion of the water in this area is used for irrigation and mining (further down river) but generally has boatable flows most of the year.
This run can be done in a day (recommended) and is a better intermediate to beginner run due to it's less steep gradient than other Mexico rivers. The run has a few riffles but no real large rapids or other commiting features. Combined with the fact that US boaters can drive here from the border states makes this a possible winter run to hold some of the non-skier-kayakers over during the winter months.
