Description
Check with locals and guidebooks for logistics on this run. This is frequently done as an overnighter to experience camping in the heart of the jungle. There is a fantastic beach about 20km into the run. As with many rivers in the tropics, the fear of overnighting this run is to have the river flood overnight. Camp high away from river level and stash the boats in a secure spot. Those familiar with the area have tails of seeing the river rise to astonishing levels in mere hours (or less).
The run starts with a super fun clean 20 foot waterfall that terminates in a giant pool and presents almost no dangers. The next 10 miles or so present some fun class IV rapids and one larger V or V- rapid that at certain levels forms a backed-up hole. The next 30 miles contain a few class IV rapids, but generally peters out to class II-III.
The air and water temperatures here are warm and bugs, including no-see-ums are plentiful.
