Stillwater Camp - East Fork

Good advanced beginner/intermediate run. Flow: The more the better, optimal around 2000 CFS. Hazards: A few logs possible, a few blind turns, shallow riverbed, fast, cold water. Once the Hayden Fork and Stillwater Forks of the Bear River merge, the river becomes the Bear River proper. Put in at Stillwater Campground, or start just downstream of the Highway 150 (Mirror Lake Highway) Bridge. Enjoy scenic meanders for a mile or so through willows and beaver flooded meadows. Some logs/trees do accumulate here, but are generally visible in advance and sneak-able. This is a good place for wildlife enthusiast to view moose, birds, naked campers, and drunk redneck fishermen. The river turns back towards Highway 150 and an old river gauge, and this could be another possible put-in (Please don't trespass as some of the land is now fenced and posted). After a little more meandering, you will pass a few islands/channels and will start to feel the current pick up and the gradient increase. You were probably wondering where the 80-100 FPM was? Well, you're about to find out. Get ready for the fun. For about a mile, the river is one non-stop class three rapid. There is little maneuvering necessary, just a few rocks/pour-overs to miss. After a few bends, the river runs straight for a good bit. You might start to notice campers/picnickers on river right. This signals the confluence with the East Fork of the Bear River. Take out here or continue down the Main Bear River
