Chit Chat : Networking - Engineer Trying To Relocate to PNW |
Author: JayB Subject: Networking - Engineer Trying To Relocate to PNW Posted: 04 May 2017 at 1:30pm Hey - I consider myself an honorary NE boater since I was there from 05-08. I have some vivid memories from the 'Took at 12.5 feet. Best of luck on your search! I think you are literally and metaphorically heading in the right direction. Not an engineer myself but triple the recommendation to focus on Bothell if you specifically want to live in the Puget Sound area and stick with medical device companies. -Other locations worth considering if you haven't already settled on the Puget Sound and/or are willing to branch out a bit career wise. -Boise might be worth a scouting mission. Way more sunshine, waaaaaaaaay lower cost of living (standard suburban tract homes are north of $500K here these days), waaaaaaaaaaay less traffic to deal with, and its a whitewater mecca. Everyone I know that lives there loves it. -Also consider Hood River. Pricey - but it's an outdoor rec fantasy land and I know that there are a least a handful of employers there that employ engineers (InSitu is the only one I can think of off the top of my head, but there are at least a few more). Also - traffic on all forums is down quite a bit these days so who knows if you'll get any leads or not, but it might be worth reaching out to other outdoor forums even if they aren't dialed into exactly the same outdoor niche. Washingtonflyfishing.com has lots of traffic and I get the sense that there are a fair number of tech/engineer types that frequent the site. Ditto for cascadeclimbers.com. Way less active these days - but when it was more active there was a pretty significant contingent of tech/engineer types that posted there. Anyhow - best of luck. Hope to SYOTR. |

Whitewater Forum : Sky Valley Update |
Author: huckin harms Subject: Sky Valley Update Posted: 04 May 2017 at 2:04pm Hi there folks. Did a bit of driving around the Skykomish river drainage today. The Foss looks clear of wood (hiked down to Ken&Barbie)in the crux zone. It was a healthy medium. The Rapid has some sticks in the lower section of the last mile. There is at least one show stopper easy to see from the road. It wouldn't be a hard portage, but nonetheless. The Lower Tye also has quiet a bit of wood still making it appear less appetizing. It has been getting some attention as of late, but scout carefully. The East Fork Miller has a 'trail' that is newly blazed to reach the log jam island that is the start of the good IV section on the Eastfork avoiding several jams upstream. The trail is easily found just a quarter mile up the road from the bridge with the Westfork. There is a narrow grassy pulloff to park along an old cut zone. If you go more than 1/2mile, you've missed it. It's got some orange ribbon marking the route, there is a bright orange highflyer skeet disc that marks the entry into the woods. Takes less than 10 minutes. This too is running at a good flow. I didn't check the stick for TopTye... my guess is it's above the stick. That's all for now! Edited by huckin harms - Today at 2:04pm |

Whitewater Forum : Solar Showers and Water Pumps |
Author: outdoorjunkie88 Subject: Solar Showers and Water Pumps Posted: 04 May 2017 at 3:05pm I've had good luck in the past making my own pump by putting a shrader valve (bike tire valve) in the tank. Then using a bike pump or electric pump to pressurize it. Cut the bike valve leaving about an 1" diameter of rubber. Then use a rubber cement or super glue to attach it to the jug Solar showers are just bags that hold water. I got the cheapest one on amazon and haven't had any problems. |
