Description

Intermediate Class III boaters rejoice because this is the Chattooga section III.  This is a longer run so plan on most of the day to truly enjoy this gem.  Section III could be the best class III run in the US southeast.  See rapids and access sections for more detailed info on this run.

Rapids

# Rapid Class Recommended flow Description Scout
1 Warwoman Rapid II+ to III —–—

This is a small river wide ledge just downstream from the put in and where warwoman creek joins the Chattooga.  Run from left to right as you enter this rapid.

scout from either bank if you wish

2 First Island Rapid II to II+ —–—

Most prefer the run on the right side of the island

3 Rock Gardens II+ —–—

The river makes a hard right hand turn and immediately after the turn is a decent size rock garden that you'll need to navigate and work through

4 3 Rooster Tails III —–—

A large rock in the river forms this rapid.  Most boaters take the left channel which is the most obvious.

5 Dicks Creek Ledge III+ to IV —–—

This ledge runs the width of the river where Dicks Creek enters the river on river right.  At high flows large hydraulics and holes appear here.  This rapid could be the crux of the run.  It's worth a scout if you're unfamiliar with this stretch.

6 Sandy Ford Rapid III to IV- —–—

The river is broken into many little ledges here creating a straight forward run at low water and another hard rapid at high water.  You can also access the river at this point from the Sandy Ford road just off of the Earl's Ford Road.

7 Narrows III+ to IV —–—

This is a long rapid created by many large rock constrictions and ledges.  There's also a few undercuts in here so be careful.  This can be boof alley if you're on your A-game

8 Second Ledge III to IV —–—

This is another almost river wide ledge.  This ledge is around 5 to 6 feet in height and is an excellent boof (if you can boof).

Portage and scout on the left.
