Hello and thanks for getting this far into my post!

For my 30th birthday I thought it'd be fun to try and do a leg of the Columbia River. I'm not an experienced Kayaker and neither are the several guys accompanying me. We are able-bodied and aware, not foolhardy types. We're all beginners just trying to have a good time, not any kind of foolish adrenaline rush. So I have a few questions/details:

- This would be happening in mid-July. I'm sure this limits me w/ weather... would central Washington just be too ungodly hot? I don't want to put my friends through absolute hell.
- Looking at a 5-day trip that we'll camp throughout. Any suggestions for a section of the river that is scenic and within our abilities?
- Any suggestions for a one-day safety/basics class, or suggestions for a guide service or freelance guide who would accompany us?

I've only just started scratching the surface with this, perusing The Mountaineers' "Paddling the Columbia". But I'm trying to use every avenue of helpful information possible. Thanks so much for any input!!!

Yo dawg,
What kind of vessel are you thinking? I recommend canoes for this trip. They are a good tool for unskilled dudes that want to chill hella hard and have fat camps. If you are looking for free flowing sections, there is not a 5 day trip in the state. In Washington, there are several reservoirs on the columbia that will require paddling across (lots of work and dams to portage). I believe that the longest section of free flowing columbia is near hanford. I have done a 2 day trip out of canoes on that section and it was fun (about 1.5 days of freeflowing river and .5 days of reservoir paddling. Have you considered going to eastern montana and floating the Missouri? That is the best multi day canoe camping in the NW. You could put in anywhere around Ft. Benton and float all the way down to Lake Peck (that would be over a week) or some abbreviated version of that. Camping and scenery are spectacular on that stretch and the river is warm, flat and facilitates maximum chilling.

Hey Matt,

You might want to try this girl's stretches, the problem is often (for me for sure) that the tightness is not just in the hamstrings, it's in the lower back, which prevents people from flexing from the hips and they hunch instead. Try the first one on this page (should be 'get to the root of tight hamstrings':

http://realigntherapy.com/category/blog/

And this one is for hip flexibility, I think it helps with playboating:

Happy flexing. :)

I've paddled alone a lot, mostly park and play or longer (sometimes multiday) Class I-II, but have paddled Class IV alone as a Class IV boater when I was younger.

I think that how hard you push yourself and what you paddle relative to what you'd run with your normal group is up to you; I wouldn't worry about a rule like sticking a class below what you normally paddle.  It depends on the run (both the dangers of the run, and whether it?s the type of run where someone else?s help would actually be useful in the event of an accident).  But it also depends on you, how you feel, and the experience you?re looking for.

Unlike disdalw, I paddle a lot worse alone, and I learn much more slowly.  I spent two years playboating alone, 3-7 days a week when the rivers weren?t frozen because there weren?t very many other boaters (this was in southeast Michigan).  Despite boating very frequently, and really focusing on technique, my technique barely improved (though I did get in better shape).

There are a few factors here.  One of them is that I really learn a lot by watching other people, of any skill level. Another is that it?s easy to wear yourself out quickly when playboating alone, because you don?t stop and rest as much (or I don?t at least). I also can get caught up daydreaming when I?m boating alone and get sloppy. This isn?t a problem for the big rapids but it could be on the littler stuff that isn?t as expected.  It?s also a problem for me playboating; I just won?t commit to refining a move as much. I suppose a little bit of it is caring more about carping in front of friends than alone, and I push myself harder with friends.

Additionally, I simply enjoy paddling alone less than with friends.  I really like the camaraderie of boating.  I used to dig adventuring alone and did it regularly, but now I rarely seek it out.  I still explore new places (by truck, bike or on foot) alone or w/ dog, and that works out because I don't have to worry about other people wanting to turn back or go at a different pace or whatever.  But the shuttle and dog factors make exploring alone by boat harder.

Thank you irenen!

I have reason to think that you are onto something with the tightness not just being in the hamstrings. I crushed 2 back vertebrae in 2011 and have fully recovered and have no pain but I think many of my back muscles have since been holding tight even when they don't need to. I walk slightly different as a result. So this stretch you shared is probably perfect for me.

Amazing that the guy in that first link improved his flexibility after just a single stretch session.

Thank you for sharing these and I will for sure be working on these. I of course will not let anybody see me while I am working on these but none the less I will be working on these.
