Description

Anyone who is serious about running rivers knows that the Grand Canyon is the mecca of all river runs.  The Grand is to rafting/kayaking as Yosemite is to rock climbers.  It is a must do trip!  Whether you are running it in rafts, J-rigs, kayaks, dories or whatever, the point is to experience the river, the canyon and the friendships.

Anyone who has run this canyon (either commercially or privately) claim it an experience of a lifetime.  Life long friendships get created in this canyon.  Just as well, make sure the party you choose to go with is the right party, because lifelong enemies have been created in this canyon as well.

All of the rapids in the Grand Canyon are defined on a scale of 1 to 10.  This is unique to the Colorado river as most everywhere else the rapids are rated on the international class I through VI scale.  See each description of the rapid for the grand canyon scale.  We've tried to match the international scale appropriately.

Rapids

# Rapid Class Recommended flow Description Scout
1 Badger Creek Rapid III to IV 4,000–50,000

Class 4-6 on the Grand Canyon Scale.  III-IV on the international scale.  This is the first big rapid of the trip.  Rocky on the left.  Follow the tongue and pick a line down through the center.

Scout on from the left bank.  People have flipped here so it may be worth taking the time to check it out.

2 Soap Creek Rapid III to IV 4,000–50,000

Grand Canyon scale (5-6).  Class III to IV.  Fairly straight forward rapid.

Scout from the left bank.

3 Sheer Wall Rapid II- to III- 4,000–50,000

2-3 on the Grand Canyon Scale.  II- to III- on the international scale.  This rapid is caused by a debris fan from Tanner Wash.  At low water it will be rocky on river left.

4 House Rock Rapid III to IV+ 4,000–50,000

4-7 on the grand canyon scale.  III- to IV+ on the international scale.  This rapid becomes harder at lower water.  The river pushes towards the left wall across a sandbar at the top of the rapid.  This creates a series of wave trains running down the left wall.  Problem is there is a very large hole at the bottom left of the rapid.  Enter at the left of the rapid by the wall and pull right to miss the hole.  If you pull to soon you will hit the shallow sand bar area on river right.

Rock house rapid hole will easy flip any raft.  This is considered one of the harder rapids on Marble Canyon

Scout from the sand bar on river right.  Flash floods are changing House Rock rapid and other rapids in Marble Canyon so unless you run the canyon regularly, it's probably a great idea to scout.

5 North Canyon Rapid III 4,000–50,000

4-5 on the Grand Canyon Scale.  III on the international scale.  Read and run.  Run right of center.

6 21 Mile Rapid III 4,000–50,000

3 on the Grand Canyon Scale.  II+ on the international scale.

9 Georgie Rapid II to IV 4,000–50,000

3-7 on the grand canyon scale.  II to iV on the international scale.  This rapid is harder at lower water.  Named after Grand Canyon guide Georgie White Clark.  Previously known as 24 Mile Rapid.

10 24 1/2 Mile Rapid III 4,000–50,000

5-6 on the Grand Canyon Scale.  Solid III on the international scale.  This rapid curves to the left with the river channel as the water is pushed against the right bank.  Don't follow too far on the outside of the curve.

Scout from the left bank

5 on the Grand Canyon Scale.  III on the international scale.

25 Sockdolager Rapid III to IV- 4,000–50,000

5-7 on the Grand Canyon Scale.  III to IV- on the international scale.  The canyon narrows here giving this rapid a more committing feeling.  This was one of the few rapids that Powell had to run since there was not much room to portage.  Again this is a longer set of rapids much like Hance Rapid.

26 Grapevine Rapid III to IV 4,000–50,000

6-7 on the Grand Canyon Scale.  III to IV on the international scale.

Permit info

GC Permits have always been notoriously difficult to obtain compared to other rivers.  As of the last couple of years though, the permitting office changed from a waiting list to a lottery.  This has greatly improved the chances of private river runners obtaining a permit.  All of the red tape can be read and deciphered from the GC website.  See the Permit Agency URL to take you there.

Permits aren't cheap but they are more economical than a commercial trip.  $25 lottery submission fee, then a $400 fee if you win the lottery.  After that it is $100 per person minus the $400 deposit.
